Your Own Personal Unicorn

Had a nice outing with the scope last week, but we have two new family members in our house, and since cute conquers all, I'll leave the astronomy post til later in the week.

These are our two new kitties, picked up at the animal shelter this weekend. We went with the understanding we were going to get one kitten, but when you have three sets of beautiful females eyes batting at you, and an endless loop of "Can we please get two kitties? Please? Please?" in your ear, it'd be inhuman to say no.

Inhuman.

This is Precious, S's kitty. Prior to Precious, she was named Gracias. Prior to Gracias, she was named Star. She'll almost certainly have a new name by tomorrow morning.

This is Bellatrix, KK's kitty, Bella for short. Bellatrix is a star in Orion, his right shoulder, if you care about these things (the left shoulder is the more famous Betelgeuse, pronounced Beetle Juice). I must admit to having a little influence on the choosing of this name. But what's the point of being a Dad if you don't occasionally appoint yourself Minister of Propaganda?

The girls are insanely happy. They haven't fought for like 20 hours (of course, they were asleep for 10 of those hours). They have scratches all over their hands. They don't care. Those kitties could have laser-beam eyes, and the girls wouldn't care. It's as if we bought them their own personal unicorns.

SOOO cute! I told my 9 yr old I'd get two kittens when the renovation was done (it's just done) and we already have two cats- they are fifteen yr old - and, and.

I want my sons to experience kittens before they get too "cool" for kitties. Two worries: My poor old kitties. AND- FOUR CATS?! My house stinks already...

I started with just one, which became two. I swore I'd never have more than three, then four. I'm at six now and I refuse, utterly REFUSE to go beyond that.

Utterly.

Two is good. They are each others friends- you don't feel bad when you go on vacation.

SIX! I love it. In September, when I'm back, I think I'm going to get the two more....

But does your house just stink? One my cats needs an adult cat diaper- I send a good amount of my life trying to clean up after him.

My cold academic heart has defrosted a little. I love the name Bellatrix. Good call on your daughter's part.

Glad I could you melt your heart, E, before you die of necrosis. Mixed metaphor though. Icy hearts melt. Stony hearts crack. Or erode, I suppose.

Good idea, Maggie. I actually toyed with the idea of Photoshopping little horns on them after I read your comment.

And while we're at it Maggie, what exactly is F*cked Chicken?

Gordo, I am very much the big softy. As, I'm guessing, you secretly are too.

Four cats is alotta cats, Paula. We have three. Our old one is not too happy about the new living arrangements. But she'll live. I'm sure your old ones will too.

I did not peg you as a six cat man, Irr. Are they farm cats? Or those uppity, spoiled indoor cats.

Yeah, Bellatrix is a fine name, Noel. And shortens to both Bella and Trixie.

CC, they're not toooo spoiled, indoor, mildly-uppity cats except for the last, Fiona. She was rescued from the attic--mama was raising three up there, and Fiona fell down into the wall. Had to tear honking great holes in the sheetrock to get her out, bottle-fed her (she was about four days old) and now? Now she's a Real cat, which is to say she has all the spunk and attitude of a cat raised on "wild milk" but the housecat attention needing side. Quite a mix.

I assume by the reference that you have seen the SNL skit with the kitties that shoot lasers?

Hmm. Here's a thought -- name both cats Bellatrix? And then use the Bella and Trixie.... Could be good for an hour of amusement until the next name emerges...
